The genetic anomaly behind Down syndrome is random and its cause is still unknown. There is no conclusive scientific evidence indicating that environmental factors play a role in its occurrence.
Talk to them! Ask them how they are doing. Shake their hand. Give them a hug. Smile. It’s okay to ask questions. And it’s okay if you don’t understand everything they say. Just let them know you are trying. Making an effort to reach out and include them means more to them than anything else.

Genetic anomalies, like Down syndrome, cannot be cured, and there is currently no known way to prevent it. But scientific research continues to add an increasing variety of treatments for symptoms and conditions associated with Down syndrome
An increase in awareness and inclusion, along with the willingness of medical professionals to treat children with Down syndrome, has allowed for an increased realization of the capabilities and potential of these children. We have every reason to believe that this trend will continue and these individuals will have bright futures.
